Leica Cameras derive their name from a shortening of "Leitz Camera". While on the staff at the Leitz Wetzlar Factory in 1911, Oskar Barnack set out to create a portable camera. The Wetzlar works dated back to 1849, founded by Carl Kellner, a mathematician and optician, for the purpose of developing lenses and microscopes.

Barnack had begun his career as an engineer at Carl Zeiss lens manufactory at Jena. He actually conceived of the Leica camera design as early as 1905, but for many years the design existed only in his brain. He made a 1914 photo with his ur-Leica, a compact predecessor with a retracting brass lens, that chronicled the coming of World War I. The picture depicts a German soldier posting an early mobilization order from Kaiser Wilhelm.

The result of his work formed the basis for the 35mm camera. Together with the highly-acclaimed lenses developed by Max Berek, the Ernst Leitz Company, located in the small German town of Solms (near Frankfurt), was able to bring the new Leica Camera to the commercial market in the form of the Leica I at a trade show at Leipzig.

When the Leica I was introduced, photographers were accustomed to lugging around suitcase-sized photography paraphernalia. The cameras enclosed used 13 inch by 16 inch plates, rather than the present-day 35mm film on rolls.

Because these portable cameras were so small and lightweight by current standards, Leica cameras were at first perceived as toys for a lady's purse. That first impression was soon dispelled when the public came to appreciate the stunning images the camera produced and their extreme durability.

Carl Wolff, who bought the company in 1926, is largely credited with expanding the fame of the Leica brand. Leica was also famous for high-quality binoculars, dating back to 1907. Leica camera sales totalled 90,000 by 1932, and a million by 1961.

These rugged cameras were witness to two world wars, often from both sides of the conflict. Not only the Americans, but also the Russians, were fond of the Leica in World War II. The Soviets viewed the Leica as a guilty pleasure, despite its capitalist "fascist" origins. Ironically, many of The Leica family were Jews.

Russian Aleksandr Rodchenko, also a sulptor and a painter, shot many memorable pictures, including the 1934 "Girl with a Leica". Fellow Russian, Ilya Ehrenburg, created a series of 1930's images that depict the raw underbelly of France between the World Wars.

In the 1930's, French painter Henri Cartier-Bresson migrated his art to photography. The means of his transformation was the Leica camera. His often candid black and white photos are among the finest in the illustrious Leica legacy.

The famous Times Square kiss on V-J Day was shot by Alfred Eisenstaedt on a Leica.

Photographers the world over have praised various Leica Cameras, such as the Leica I, Leica M3, Leica M3, and later the Leicaflex SL (its first SLR camera). Enthusiasts have made the brand a cult favorite, to the extent that a Leica Number 107 test market model from 1923 sold in 2007 for a world record price of nearly a half million dollars US.

Hot on the heels of the one year old 40D, the Canon EOS 50D is a perfect replacement or upgrade to that semi pro, starter SLR and healthy step towards a professional body.

It is almost identical to the vunderkind 40D, but only on the outside. The dramatically increased imaging device combined with a host of top end extras will mean that the extra lenses you sold your family for will serve better than ever.

One of the most notable highlights include an incredibly robust ISO range of 100-12800 which brings the Canon in line with the Nikon equivalents. The LCD has also had its resolution doubled to 640x480, a vital improvement over the 40D which made edge and clarity checking nigh on impossible. The new screen combined with the improved live view features make this camera a completely different experience to the 40D. The list of technical improvement is long comprehensive and very impressive and includes everything from a new processor to an HDMI port.

If for some reason you are forced to lend this robust and beautiful piece of kit to some n00b family member, which is code for 'my photography is rustier than a Hollywood motherboard' there is a little secret weapon called CA mode. Creative Auto Shooting mode or idiot-plus mode allows for point and click ease with your R21k SLR. From here you can move two pretty sliders that will adjust background blur (aperture) and brightness (exposure). There are also six different picture shooting styles which will change a battery of settings and give you completely different and occasionally impressive photographic styles.

When you graduate past noobhood or dare we say it read the manual, you will notice that many of the advanced features and manual settings have also been improved and tweaked. The war for megapixels seems to be coming to an end with features and price being the battleground of the future. It is for this reason that the $1500 Nikon D90, complete with GPS geotagging and HD video, is already making the Canon age prematurely.

With a nice price reduction we would gladly sacrifice bells and whistles for the better image quality the Canon promises but until then, this camera is only for fanboys with lens collections and trust funds.

What Pictures Do I Want To Take

This may seem obvious but do I want to take pictures of friends and family, Sports and events or maybe far away objects like buildings and scenery. Many of the lower end cameras will provide great pictures for all these; they will have the option to point and shoot within the settings, which will make them very easy to use.

Do I want Digital These days digital is at the forefront of most cameras, in fact even most of the professionals have gone away from film, digital allows you to add your pictures to your pc and in most cases has the benefit of imaging software as part of the package. Assuming you want digital then your next thing to is do I want a compact camera or do I want the SLR option. There are many differences between the Compact and SLR camera not lease of all the price, so again you must have a budget in mind.

SLR or Compact SLRs are mostly focused on capturing still images, not video, but on some compact you can take videos, compact digital cameras have electronic zooms, just push a button and the camera's lens zooms in and out, with a digital SLR, you're going to need two hands as zooming is a manual process. Compact cameras with a 10x or 12x zoom cover an extremely wide range from wide angle to telephoto, with SLR you have the option to interchange the lens, these all come at a price. If you want a 12x zoom with a digital SLR, it's a better bet to get two lenses instead of just one.

The Bottom Line Do you want to take more professional-looking photos, do you want to be able to change the lens attached to your camera, do you want more control over the photos that you take, do you want to take lots of photos in dim light, if this is the case then the SLR range is the one for you. If you do not want these options then go for a compact digital. Always ensure you have a budget, do not buy a camera just because it looks good and has loads of functions, you may never use half of them and would not guarantee good quality pictures. Always choose a good brand such as Cannon, Panasonic, Nikon or Olympus, all have a great product range and will have a camera to fit in with everyone's needs, I have a preference for Panasonic and have both a compact and SLR, the compact I use for the basic point and shoot, the SLR for the more complex pictures. The Nikon D700 is the newest addition to the Nikon D series digital cameras. The main difference between the D700 and its earlier D series digital cousins is the size of the sensor. The D700 is a true 35mm format with a digital sensor that is a 23.9mm by 36mm. Nikon has designated the new format as FX as opposed to DX for its earlier digital SLR cameras.

When you consider all the features available and the fact that the D700 will use nearly any Nikon lens produced since 1974, the D700 offers considerable bang for the serious amateur or working professional's buck.

If your stable of Nikon lens contains both FX and DX lens, both can be used on the D700 although if a DX lens is used, the camera will sense this and if Auto DX crop is selected in the Image Area menu, the camera will automatically set the proper picture area for that lens.

Some plus factors of the Nikon D700 are these:

1. It will permit you to use your older 35mm Nikon lens in their true format.

2. Most of the camera's control functions are similiar to earlier Nikon D series cameras. Thus, if you own or have owned a D100, D200 or D300 for example, most of the controls will be familiar.

3. It is considered to be an advanced amateur's or professional user's camera and because of its size and weight, the D700 is considered by many to be ideal for the wedding photographer.

All digital cameras should be sealed well enough that sand or water won't find a way in. It's just a question of good build quality. Olympus however thinks this is a big revelation and a major marketing point for the Stylus 790SW. The bigger question though is, does it take good pictures?

Being a waterproof camera shouldn't just mean you can hold the camera underwater, and it won't leak. It still needs to take good pictures. While the 790SW can be held underwater (up to 33 feet according to Olympus), the pictures it takes are not so great. In fact, if you do take it underwater, plan on taking a lot of pictures. Most will turn out quite distorted and blurry, but the more pictures you take the better your chances of getting a few good ones. In addition, the LCD is pretty much unusable underwater, as it's just too hard to see. You'll have to just point, click and hope for the best.

Meanwhile, back on dry land, it appears the Olympus Stylus 790SW is really out of it's element. If you decide to buy a 790SW, you need to be aware, that your are sacrificing image quality for durability. You will double the battery life and therefore approximately double the number of shots you can take before recharging. Most camera battery grips include a vertical shooting facility, making it much easier to use the camera in 'portrait' mode. Once you get used to having this extra set of camera controls it's hard to go back to using the camera in the conventional way!

Don't get confused

If you have made your mind up to start using a digital camera, or perhaps upgrading from an existing one, then you can be forgiven for being confused. There are thousands of digital cameras available and they all display a confusing array of specifications. And digital photography was supposed to make photography easy, wasn't it?

Luckily, many of the functions that digital cameras have are common to all so it is often down to personal choice as to which one is for you. How do you plan to use your camera? When? How much can you afford to spend?

Don't worry about terminology

The easiest mistake to make is to go for the greatest megapixels when choosing a camera. But this won't get you the best camera or the best shots. Then there is the zoom of the lens to think about - optical or digital? And what type of memory cards are used? SLR, prosumer or compact? It can be very confusing.

Decide what you want from a camera

Think what you are expecting from a digital camera? Will you be using it for family and travel type shots or will you be delving into more complex areas such as nature. Sports, portrait or landscape photography? Buying a digital camera won't make you a superstar photographer or get you noticed by the rich and famous but it can simplify your photography and make you think about what you are doing a bit more. To be a top class photographer takes years of experience.

But, there have been remarkable advances in digital photography in recent years and the very least you can expect is an affordable camera that will produce images as good as you were used to on 35mm film. You will get a state of the art camera that will fulfil most of your expected requirements.

What is different about digital?

The big difference between digital and film cameras is the ability to see your shot on the inbuilt LCD screen either before you shoot or after (sometimes both). This can allow you to see any glaring mistakes, improve composition and retake shots that weren't up to scratch.

Cost is a big factor. Don't be put off by the cost of digital cameras in the stores. They may look expensive (although prices are coming down all the time) but you will save a fortune on processing. All images you make with your digital can be downloaded from your camera onto your computer and the memory card in the camera wiped clean ready to start again. No more buying film, no more developing and printing costs - unless you want to!

And a digital camera will allow you to view your images on your computer, on your TV or send then to friends and family around the world or even upload them to free websites and galleries. The limits are endless!

Types of digital cameras

Cameras come in various types. Single Lens Reflex (SLR) cameras come with the ability to change lenses depending o the conditions. They can be complex for the casual user and the results are not necessarily better than those of good compact cameras. They are for the avid enthusiast who knows what spending lots of cash on a new lens really means.

Another type of camera is the "prosumer" model. These look and feel like SLRs but they don't have interchangeable lenses. They are, however, of a high specification and produce results that can be indistinguishable from more expensive models.

Compact cameras do not have interchangeable lenses - but often have additional components that can be attached to make them function in this way. They are usually smaller and easier to carry and handle. The have powerful functions and most have both programme mode (fully automatic) and the ability to override to a more creative mode when required. They often have between 3 and 6x optical zoom - more then enough for the avid snapper.

Enjoy digital!

Digital cameras are fun! You can see what photograph you have taken without having to wait days or weeks to finish a film or await processing. The images you take can be shared and enjoyed by everyone around you either instantly at the time of taking the picture or very quickly afterwards by email or other medium. You get instant results and if you don't like what you see then you can discard it and take it again. There are no costs involved in this.

Don't worry about "megapixels"....

There is a lot of fuss made about megapixels. This can be confusing for the majority of us. Rest assured that most cameras have at least 3 megapixels these days and will produce more than excellent results at normal sizes. Only when you enlarge to 10x8 ins or more will you find the need to invest in greater megapixels. But think back - when was the last time you EVER did that?

.... or lenses

In respect of lenses, you should consider buying a camera with a lens that will "zoom" - that is get closer to the action, or further away. If you never felt the need before, than trust me, go for a zoom lens now. You won't regret it. Luckily almost all compact cameras and all prosumer models have a zoom lens built in and of course you can buy your own zoom lenses if you have a digital SLR.

Shutter delay is normal on compact cameras

One of the annoyances you might find with compact digital cameras is that of shutter lag. This is the delay between pressing the shutter button and the picture actually being taken. It is normal. When you press the shutter button the camera goes through a sequence of checks and adjustments to calculate the best circumstances for correct exposure. This can create a delay before the shutter actually triggers and the picture is taken. You won't miss many shots but you might miss a few especially where fast action is concerned. You can minimise this problem by pressing the shutter button halfway and allowing the camera to pre-calculate conditions for exposure. In any event, the problem is a minor annoyance and is overshadowed by the tremendous benefits digital photography has to offer.

Flash is easy

Most compact cameras, prosumers and many SLRs have built in flash. This is handy if you want to get that otherwise elusive shot indoors or in the dark. But don't expect quality - external flashguns will give the best results but the sheer convenience of a built in flash makes it worth the effort.

What are "memory cards"?

People often get confused by memory cards. There is no need. Simply put, a memory card is the equivalent to film in the older film cameras. The images you take are stored on these. The main differences are that you can store many more than you would have been able to on film and that you can download them to a computer or print images out at the local store or at home and then delete all the images on the card ready to start all over again!

The camera you buy will usually take only one type of memory card. Other types won't fit. They are easily and cheaply available both in the shops and online. The come on different capacities (just like film) but typically a 256Mb sized card will be able to store around about 150 images taken on a 3 megapixel camera.

Batteries are required

Your camera will need power and these days it comes from batteries. Not so long ago, battery life was very short and consequently, costs were relatively high. Now things are better and most cameras give longer battery life. Of course you can use rechargeable batteries and these will last you for years if looked after. Many cameras allow you to recharge batteries either with a specific charger (often included in the package) or via an optional "dock" in which the camera is placed when not being used - this gives a continuous charge and means your camera is read for action at all times.

Viewing your pictures

When you have finished taking your pictures you can usually review them on your camera's built-in screen. Or, better still, you can download them easily to your computer for ease of viewing and can even watch slide shows on your TV or send them via email to your friends. Many people are setting up free galleries online to store their images or developing user-friendly "blogs". With digital, the possibilities are endless! And, all the software and cables you need are usually supplied with the camera when you buy it.

Now get your camera!

Digital cameras are the way to go. They are relatively cheap to run, produce fantastic results and will give years of pleasure.

Some compact cameras are small enough to fit in your handbag or pocket, but I still recommend purchasing a camera case. It will save your camera from unnecessary wear and tear.

What do you put in your camera bag? I place my camera, spare batteries and memory cards, a cleaning kit and any extra lenses or filters I want to take on the day into my camera bag.

Don't pack everything in your camera bag every time you go out to take photos. Travel as light as possible. Maybe purchase two camera bags - a large camera case and a smaller camera bag for those 'pack light' times.

Clean your camera bag occasionally. Dust can accumulate and could cause problems with your camera and equipment by accumulating on your lens.

Keep your camera away from luggage handlers! Most airlines allow one carry-on PLUS a personal item. A camera bag usually qualifies as your personal item.

What kinds of camera bags are there?

A weatherproof top loading shoulder camera bag is the best and most versatile option, because you can place the camera case on the ground and open the lid to retrieve your equipment.

The size of camera bag you purchase will depend on the size of your digital camera. If you have a larger camera with lots of accessories, consider purchasing a larger camera bag that has wheels. The wheels allow you to take your bag with you easily rather than lugging it around over your shoulder. Some bags with wheels can double as backpacks for when you're hiking.

If your digital camera is a small pocket model, a fanny pack for just your camera will work really well. Keep the pack over your stomach (rather than your lower back) if you're concerned about theft.

Purchasing a camera bag

When purchasing a new camera case, it's important to note the following:

- Avoid brand name camera bags. If you have a more expensive camera, try to purchase a camera bag that does not LOOK like a camera bag. Thieves are always on the lookout for bags that look like they contain valuable equipment and nothing says 'valuable inside' more than a camera case with a camera maker's brand plastered all around the outside. Purchase a camera case that's a little less conspicuous - they're usually less expensive as well.

- Think of the accessories you'll place in a camera bag before purchasing. Do you have any other equipment (such as a card reader) you might want to take with your camera? What about accessories you are thinking about purchasing in the near future?

- A camera bag with moveable padded inserts will be more versatile than one without because you can customize the inside of the camera bag to your particular camera and accessories.

- Buy a camera case with lots of pockets and zippered compartments. This way, you can store used digital camera batteries in one pocket and unused batteries in another. The same with your memory cards... I label my pockets with labels like "Batteries - Used" so I can quickly find the correct pocket while out and about.

- Watch out for the prices of camera cases (and other accessories) when purchasing a camera case at the same time as your camera. Many retailers lower the price of their cameras to compete, and increase their accessory prices to compensate.

Author is active user of canon digital cameras. First one he had was Canon D 30. Comparing the canon D30 with D60 Mr. Muskovac finds than, the major difference is that the D60 has much more pixles - 6.3 million pixels which beats the D30 with 3.25 million pixels.

He emphasis that D60 is using the CMOS which draws less power and therefore the camera can shoot more pictures on one battery than most Point-and-Shoot cameras without the loss of image quality.

In my opinion, the D60 camera's most valuable specification and feature is, that it will take all of Canon's EF (auto focus) lenses.

This was a very important consideration for me since I already own Canon EOS equipment and the following EF lenses:

20mm 2.8 28-135 IS 4.5/5.6

100mm 2.8 macro 75-300 IS 5.6

70-200mm2.8 100-400 IS 5.6 300mm 2.8

Putting the camera in action he took few shots and analyzed the quality of the pictures. He used the Canon 100mm 2.8 macro lens. Then he explains “Its focal length is 160 mm when mounted on the D60, an ideal macro lens. I use a twin macro flash, which I have been using for years with my EOS 1N. I shoot in the manual mode with this flash, using the guide number to gauge the distance. The shutter speed of the camera is set to 1/200 sec. I vary the f-stop depending on the distance of the butterfly from the imaginary film plane. The f-stop is generally varied between f16 and f25. When the distance to the subject exceeds 1 1/2 feet, I change the ISO setting from ISO100 to ISO200 instead of opening up the aperture. In this manner I could still use a small aperture value and maintain a good depth of field. With the D60 and 6.3 million pixels, I was able to make a very good 10 X 15 inch print using the largest jpeg image storage mode. Figure 1 shows a Coolie Butterfly taken at ISO200, 1/200 sec, f22, and a distance of about 2 feet”.

When he used evaluative metering on the snowy egrets against a green background, the egrets were overexposed. Then he concludes that “the same is true to a lesser extent when using Center Partial Metering and Center Weighted Average. To get the proper exposure on the White Egrets, an exposure compensation of -2/3 to -1 stop was used in the evaluative metering mode. I shoot most all my pictures using the evaluative metering mode”.

He pays attention to file numbering systems. We may choose from: (1)Continuous. (2) Auto reset. In the Continuous mode the numbering is continuous between cards. Then he points that Canon software assigns the folder numbers. The image number in each successive folder picks up where the previous folder left off, thereby providing consecutive numbering of images. The time/date is also permanently stored with each image file. Convenient storage functions allows to place Images in folders in groups of 100.

In the Auto reset mode the number resets to 0001 each time you insert a new card.

The D60 image numbering system only goes to 9900. It would have been nice to allow for 100,000 images. Heavy shooters will shoot more than 10,000 images in a year.

By keeping images in different folders, duplicate image file names can be identified and then renamed if necessary.

The D60's has nice 1.8 inch TFT color LCD monitor, It allows us to review your images right away.

Important is his comment about the battery life Usualy with 50% flash use and review mode on, he usually can perform between 350 and 400 images on one fully charged battery. He concludes “Reviewing the images does use a significant amount of battery power”.

According to the author following features of the D60 that I consider important:

1. D60 can use all Canon EF lenses.

2. Changing ISO settings in mid-roll.

3. Review your picture :immediately after making the exposure.

4. Having a built in 1.6 X extender.

5. Shooting 3 images per second and up to eight continuous images.

He gives the D60 a good grade. Most of all he is impressed with the image quality. According to him “the camera has interchangeable Electronic Focus lens capability, and multiplies your long lenses by a factor of 1.6X. Overall it looks that the D60 is a great camera

1. Megapixels

This is the key feature and determines the quality of your photographs – Megapixels refers to the resolution capability of your camera – simply put the higher the megapixel the better your results. The more megapixels the higher the quality but also the higher cost of the camera so it will be a trade off – aim for a minimum of 3 Megapixels for reasonable 4 X 6 or 8 X 10 family photographs.

Many camera’s come with onboard storage – a memory card expansion slot – or both – Storage is important because that’s where your photo’s will be placed before you transfer them to your computer or print them off – if your camera has an expansion slot and can take memory cards, ensure that these cards are easily available (e.g. SD cards) and ensure you have a way of transferring the contents of your memory card to your PC either by a card reader or a dedicated slot in your PC.

3. Ease of Transferring Pictures

Check out how you will transfer pictures to your PC or printer – many Digital camera’s these days will “dock” with compatible printers – or you may be able to connect to your PC via USB – also check if the camera comes with any software to help.

4. Features

Camera’s these days have a wide variety of features – some of which may be useful to you for example

• Does the camera come with a zoom function (is this optical or digital – optical will produce better results)

• Can the Camera take Movies?

• Can you manually adjust settings such as exposure

Before you buy your camera think about how you will use it and determine which features you’ll need.

5. Power/Battery Life

Finally the camera will no doubt be powered by batteries – check out how many – what type and the battery life you can expect from a fully charged set – can this be conserved by turning of the LCD screen or other features – many entry level cameras eat batteries for breakfast!! – make sure you aim for a long battery life and keep a stock of spares.

Being familiar with the terminology used in any subject of interest in is always useful, and digital cameras are no exception. Although most digital cameras available on the market allow you to simply point your camera and quickly snap a picture with the touch of a button, there is often a lot more going on behind the scenes than you may have realized.

1. Megapixel

When we use the term megapixel, we are referring to the maximum resolution at which a digital camera can take photos in millions of pixels. This means that a camera with a range of 4 megapixels can take photos which each contain a maximum of 4 million pixels.

But what does this mean to the consumer? One word: quality. A higher megapixel count means better quality photos, and considering the price of digital camera getting lower all the time; you should try to stick with a digital camera that has a 3 megapixel range or above, especially if you intend of making prints of your photos.

2. Focal Length

Focal length is a term overlooked far too often in amateur photography, and refers to how much the lens of a camera can magnify a shot. Focal lengths are generally split into two categories, these being wide-angle and telephoto, which are better for spacious and narrow fields of view respectively.

Due to the ease of manufacturing telephoto lenses, digital camera manufacturers seem to provide wide-angle lenses in a lot less cameras, even though these lenses are better suited towards the type of photos that most people commonly take, including groups of friends and wide landscapes. To sum up, a wide-angle focal length is the better choice in most cases, with the 20mm and 35mm varieties catering to most people’s needs.

3. Digital Zoom

Unlike the focal length, digital zoom is a term that seems to be given a lot more attention than it deserves. Unlike optical zoom, which uses the physical lenses inside the camera to enlarge a scene, digital zoom electronically enlarges the pixels in the center area of a photo, meaning that any time you use the digital zoom function on your camera you are actually sacrificing the quality of your photos. It is a good idea to disable the digital zoom function all together to stop this from happening.

4. ISO

The term ISO stands for the International Standards Organization, but what does this have to do with your digital camera? The organization sets standards for photography, and the ISO range of a camera refers to how sensitive the camera is to light.

For instance, a low ISO number (100 or under) is not very sensitive to light, and is best for shots in good lighting conditions. A higher ISO range means that the camera will be suitable for photography in darker conditions, so it is best to look for a camera that has an adjustable range; ISO 100 to 400 should be adequate for most people’s needs.

5. Shutter Lag

Shutter lag refers to the time between pressing the button to take a photograph and the time when the picture actually gets taken. This may not seem a very important factor when buying a camera, but think of it this way: if you have to wait a second or longer for a photo to be taken, like with many older and inexpensive digital cameras, then chances are that you won’t end up with the photo you desired. Many camera manufacturers do not list the shutter lag time for their cameras, so the best way to find this out is by testing a camera before you buy.
