Leica Cameras - Antique

Leica Cameras - Antique
by Lawrence Bell

Leica Cameras derive their name from a shortening of "Leitz Camera". While on the staff at the Leitz Wetzlar Factory in 1911, Oskar Barnack set out to create a portable camera. The Wetzlar works dated back to 1849, founded by Carl Kellner, a mathematician and optician, for the purpose of developing lenses and microscopes.

Barnack had begun his career as an engineer at Carl Zeiss lens manufactory at Jena. He actually conceived of the Leica camera design as early as 1905, but for many years the design existed only in his brain. He made a 1914 photo with his ur-Leica, a compact predecessor with a retracting brass lens, that chronicled the coming of World War I. The picture depicts a German soldier posting an early mobilization order from Kaiser Wilhelm.

The result of his work formed the basis for the 35mm camera. Together with the highly-acclaimed lenses developed by Max Berek, the Ernst Leitz Company, located in the small German town of Solms (near Frankfurt), was able to bring the new Leica Camera to the commercial market in the form of the Leica I at a trade show at Leipzig.

When the Leica I was introduced, photographers were accustomed to lugging around suitcase-sized photography paraphernalia. The cameras enclosed used 13 inch by 16 inch plates, rather than the present-day 35mm film on rolls.

Because these portable cameras were so small and lightweight by current standards, Leica cameras were at first perceived as toys for a lady's purse. That first impression was soon dispelled when the public came to appreciate the stunning images the camera produced and their extreme durability.

Carl Wolff, who bought the company in 1926, is largely credited with expanding the fame of the Leica brand. Leica was also famous for high-quality binoculars, dating back to 1907. Leica camera sales totalled 90,000 by 1932, and a million by 1961.

These rugged cameras were witness to two world wars, often from both sides of the conflict. Not only the Americans, but also the Russians, were fond of the Leica in World War II. The Soviets viewed the Leica as a guilty pleasure, despite its capitalist "fascist" origins. Ironically, many of The Leica family were Jews.

Russian Aleksandr Rodchenko, also a sulptor and a painter, shot many memorable pictures, including the 1934 "Girl with a Leica". Fellow Russian, Ilya Ehrenburg, created a series of 1930's images that depict the raw underbelly of France between the World Wars.

In the 1930's, French painter Henri Cartier-Bresson migrated his art to photography. The means of his transformation was the Leica camera. His often candid black and white photos are among the finest in the illustrious Leica legacy.

The famous Times Square kiss on V-J Day was shot by Alfred Eisenstaedt on a Leica.

Photographers the world over have praised various Leica Cameras, such as the Leica I, Leica M3, Leica M3, and later the Leicaflex SL (its first SLR camera). Enthusiasts have made the brand a cult favorite, to the extent that a Leica Number 107 test market model from 1923 sold in 2007 for a world record price of nearly a half million dollars US.

Capture Unforgettable Moments of your Life with Cheap Digital Cameras

Capture Unforgettable Moments of your Life with Cheap Digital Cameras
by Alden Jerry

Gone are the days, when the people used to rely on traditional film cameras. Nowadays, there are numerous cheap digital cameras available in the market that are very reliable compared to old ones.

Some times ago, images captured by the film cameras were considered to be the only way to record unforgotten moment of life. However, there are some factors on which a traditional camera does not stand up to the expectations. The factors such as difficult-to-use, poor image quality, special picture effects, display screen and worse light conditions are the prominent ones where traditional film camera proved to be completely sub-standard.

With the invention of new technology, manufactures have added various dimensions to their products. Some of leading manufactures such as Kodak, Canon, Sony, Fuji and HP offer cheap digital cameras for the consumers. These devices generally have few advanced features such as high resolution settings, auto focus, automatic exposures, optical and digital zoom lens, high capacity memory cards, changeable lenses and waterproofing. Image quality is related to megapixel rating directly and the handling of white balance by the camera. If one wants to send images on the web, email or store them on hard disk drives, digital camera with a 2.0 to 3.2 mega pixels rating are more than satisfactory. If one wants to have still pictures of portrait quality, then one has to look for cameras whose resolution is above 3.2 mega pixels.

Due to the megapixel rating, most of the cameras are much expensive. The higher megapixel are able to produce larger photographs without grains. The Samsung Digimax A502 is a 5 mega pixels high-resolution digital camera, which comes with 5 x digital zoom that can be used for a wide range of photographic purposes. Olympus SP-565UZ 10MP Digital Camera Review

Olympus SP-565UZ 10MP Digital Camera Review
by Maria Ysabel

I just bought a Brand new and Discounted Olympus SP-565UZ Digital Camera from Electronic Sales. Here is the editorial review of my new camera.

Olympus has given the SP-570 UZ - the world's most powerful ultra zoom digital camera - an extreme makeover by creating the new SP-565 Ultra Zoom, a smaller and lighter version with the same amazing precision-crafted 20x wide-angle telephoto zoom lens (26-520mm equivalent), but the ease-of-use of a point-and-shoot camera.

Photographers searching for an even more portable and approachable ultra zoom to take anywhere will rejoice in the camera's new form factor, and with 10 million pixels and Dual Image Stabilization delivering superior, virtually blur-free images, the SP-565 UZ is proof that good things do come in small packages.

The camera's enhanced Face Detection can now track up to 16 faces within the frame and optimize exposure even when subjects are moving, ensuring that family reunion group portraits will come out well-focused. In addition, the SP-565 UZ ensures sharp, brilliant images with a host of other features:

Dual Image Stabilization combines the benefits of Sensor-Shift Image Stabilization and Digital Image Stabilization to compensate for both camera shake and moving subjects, helping to create beautiful, virtually blur-free images in any situation;

Shadow Adjustment Technology enables users to preview and capture images as the human eye sees them, compensating for difficult lighting situations and maintaining detail in highlights while improving detail in the shadows to produce more balanced photos; and Perfect Shot Preview takes the guesswork out of great photography by allowing users to preview and select various photographic effects live on the LCD screen, before snapping the shot.

SP-565UZ Highlights

Lightening the Lens Load

Lugging a bag full of lenses can slow traveling photographers down, so the SP-565 UZ comes fully equipped with the equivalent of three lenses in one complete camera. The bright, f2.8-4.5 lens provides the equivalent of 26-520mm focal length with 100x total seamless zoom (5x digital zoom). By using the toggle lever with one finger, users can get close to the action with the versatile yet compact 20x super telephoto zoom, while the wide-angle (26mm) lens captures more of the subject in each frame. Its super-macro capabilities capture the subtlest details from as close as one centimeter. The compact lens construction combines aspherical and extra-dispersion (ED) lens elements to deliver edge-to-edge sharpness and clarity. Whether you're hiking through the mountains or shooting a tennis match, this sturdy compact body with wide-angle and telephoto lenses provide the versatility to get the job done.

Dual Image Stabilization

Dual Image Stabilization enables users to take crisp, clear pictures in virtually any shooting situation - adjusting for camera shake and a moving subject. Olympus' mechanical Sensor-Shift Image Stabilization keeps images sharp by adjusting the CCD to compensate for camera shake, which often occurs when zooming in on your subject and in low-light conditions when shutter speeds are slower. Digital Image Stabilization freezes the action with high ISO sensitivity and fast shutter speeds that help to prevent blur caused by a moving subject.

Face Detection

Face Detection tracks up to 16 faces within the frame and automatically focuses (Face Detection AF) and optimizes exposure (Face Detection AE) quickly for sharp, brilliant portrait pictures. Now, your subject's face is in focus whether it is in the center of the target area or not.

Manual Controls

The Manual, Aperture Priority and Shutter Speed Priority modes give users versatility and control for optimal performance in any situation. Users can express their creative vision - adjusting the f-stop for detailed portraits with softened backgrounds, or slowing the exposure speed to create the blurred effect of motion, or just sit back and let the camera do the thinking through the use of the automatic settings.

High-Speed Sequential Shooting and Pre-Capture

The SP-565 UZ is capable of capturing images at an incredible 13.5 frames per second (with a reduced image size of 3 megapixels). The inclusion of Pre-Capture technology, which works in conjunction with High-Speed Sequential Shooting, enables users to capture the action before and after fully pressing the shutter button. Pre-Capture begins working as soon as the focus is locked, automatically archiving 10 frames in the camera's buffer memory prior to the shutter release - virtually guaranteeing that none of the action will be missed even if the user's reaction time is slow. Perfect for situations where timing is essential, such as photographing a tennis player serving, children playing or a whale breaching.

Shadow Adjustment Technology

Shooting outdoors in bright daylight can be tricky because of the extreme contrast between dark shadowed areas and bright sunlight areas. While the human eye is capable of detecting the nuances between dark and light and all the details in between, image sensors traditionally have not been quite as sensitive. The SP-565 UZ addresses this challenge head-on with a new Shadow Adjustment Technology, which compensates for extreme contrast where the shadow areas are underexposed and lack visible detail. With the new technology, users can preview and capture images that have the same contrast as seen with the naked eye.

Perfect Shot Preview

The SP-565 UZ features a Perfect Shot Preview mode that enables users to preview and select various photographic effects (such as zoom, exposure compensation, white balance and metering) on a live, multi-window screen before snapping the shot. Perfect Shot Preview enables users to see precisely what the image will look like when adjustments are made, ensuring users are capturing the exact image they want. It is an ideal way for novice users to learn about the effects of different photography techniques.

Perfect Fix In-Camera Editing

Olympus' Perfect Fix feature offers quick solutions for unanticipated image quality issues, which may be caused by several adverse conditions. Lighting Fix can be used to adjust any underexposed areas and Red-Eye Fix can be used to reduce the effects of red-eye sometimes caused by a direct flash. Additional in-camera editing functions can be quickly accessed right in the camera by the touch of a button; features available include resizing, trimming, black and white, and sepia.

TruePic III Image Processor

Olympus' enhanced TruePic III Image Processor produces crystal clear photos using all the pixel information for each image to deliver superior picture quality with more accurate colors, true-to-life flesh tones and faster processing speeds. TruePic III also captures sharp images at high ISO settings, which are traditionally associated with increasing image noise or producing grainy photos.

33 Shooting Modes Including Multi-Fireworks

The SP-565 UZ makes it easy to take great photos in a variety of scenarios and lighting situations with 33 shooting modes, including a Multi-Fireworks mode. To capture the most stunning fireworks displays, this multi-exposure feature overlays the fireworks to create the memory of a lifetime. To activate any of the camera's pre-set modes, simply select the desired mode for portraits, landscapes, night scenes, fast-action and more.

Versatile Memory

All Olympus digital point-and-shoot cameras accept xD-Picture Card media. The SP-565 UZ will also come equipped with an adapter, which will enable microSD memory cards to be used when capturing images. The microSD cards are emerging in consumer electronic devices, including mobile phones and PDAs. Users can also easily display photos on their HDTVs.

Olympus Master 2 Software

Olympus Master 2 software provides the ultimate in digital imaging management. An intuitive user interface makes downloading to your computer quick and simple, and images are easily organized by folders or albums and searchable by date in Calendar view. Also, with one-click editing tools, such as red-eye removal, images can be touched up before printing or e-mailing. Online support, templates, firmware upgrades and other user services are just a mouse-click away. Use the optional muvee Theater Pack to create professional quality slide shows and DVDs from your pictures using any of several built-in templates.

EOS 1000D Digital SLR Camera

EOS 1000D Digital SLR Camera
by Canon New Zealand

Introduction

Canon's EOS 1000D is an SLR digital camera that's ideal for those upgrading from a compact camera for the first time. The EOS 1000D makes it easy to transition to the next level of photography without compromising the quality for which DSLR cameras are known.

DiG!C III Image Processor

Built with Canon's own DiG!C III Image Processor, the EOS 1000D is a powerful camera. This processor functions as the brain of the EOS 1000D, delivering 12-bit colour and photos with rich, sharp details. The power of the DiG!C III Image Processor is what gives the EOS 1000D its increased responsiveness, making for more intuitive operation, which is helpful to first-time SLR digital camera users.

10.1 megapixel CMOS sensor

A 10.1 megapixel CMOS sensor combines with the DiG!C III to provide the amazing image quality offered by the Canon EOS 1000D. The CMOS, which stands for complementary metal oxide semiconductor, has more pixels than any camera in its class. There is low noise, even when shooting at high ISO speeds, and you get vivid, natural colours.

Live View

Users can compose their shots on the 2.5" LCD screen using the camera's Live View Function. For help centering your shots, you can enable the grid overlay function. Grid overlay is an excellent tool for photographing the horizon.

Speed

Not every subject is going to be as still as a bowl of fruit on the table. A photographer needs speed in order to capture action shots and wildlife. The EOS 1000D can shoot up to 3 frames per second in bursts of up to 5 RAW files or 514 JPEGs. With the combination of minimal shutter lag, a near-instant startup time of 0.1 seconds and fast autofocus, users will never miss that perfect spontaneous shot.

Lightweight and compact

The EOS 1000D is the lightest DSLR ever made by Canon. It's compact and lightweight, with a body weighing only 450g and measuring 126.1 x 97.5 x 61.9mm.With the 1000D, Canon has made digital SLR photography portable.

Picture Style Settings

The EOS 1000D comes with six preset Picture Style settings, such as portrait and landscape. Simply select the style that fits your shot, and the EOS 1000D will automatically optimise settings such as contrast and saturation. You can build your Picture Style library with additional downloadable "Picture Style Files" offered by Canon.

Lens compatibility

The EOS 1000D is an excellent base point for branching out into various types and styles of photography. It's compatible with more than 60 EF and EF-S lenses. Users can try their hand at everything from tight close-ups with a telephoto lens to sweeping landscapes with an ultra-wide angle lens.

Conclusion

The 1000D comes on the heels of the 20th anniversary of Canon's EOS line of digital SLR cameras. Canon continues to build upon the success of the EOS family by developing new technology for taking perfect pictures with ease. Canon has definitely achieved that goal with the EOS 1000D, which pairs speed and image quality to make a DLSR camera that's both powerful and user-friendly.

Canon EOS 50D

Canon EOS 50D
by Sandra Prior

Hot on the heels of the one year old 40D, the Canon EOS 50D is a perfect replacement or upgrade to that semi pro, starter SLR and healthy step towards a professional body.

It is almost identical to the vunderkind 40D, but only on the outside. The dramatically increased imaging device combined with a host of top end extras will mean that the extra lenses you sold your family for will serve better than ever.

One of the most notable highlights include an incredibly robust ISO range of 100-12800 which brings the Canon in line with the Nikon equivalents. The LCD has also had its resolution doubled to 640x480, a vital improvement over the 40D which made edge and clarity checking nigh on impossible. The new screen combined with the improved live view features make this camera a completely different experience to the 40D. The list of technical improvement is long comprehensive and very impressive and includes everything from a new processor to an HDMI port.

If for some reason you are forced to lend this robust and beautiful piece of kit to some n00b family member, which is code for 'my photography is rustier than a Hollywood motherboard' there is a little secret weapon called CA mode. Creative Auto Shooting mode or idiot-plus mode allows for point and click ease with your R21k SLR. From here you can move two pretty sliders that will adjust background blur (aperture) and brightness (exposure). There are also six different picture shooting styles which will change a battery of settings and give you completely different and occasionally impressive photographic styles.

When you graduate past noobhood or dare we say it read the manual, you will notice that many of the advanced features and manual settings have also been improved and tweaked. The war for megapixels seems to be coming to an end with features and price being the battleground of the future. It is for this reason that the $1500 Nikon D90, complete with GPS geotagging and HD video, is already making the Canon age prematurely.

With a nice price reduction we would gladly sacrifice bells and whistles for the better image quality the Canon promises but until then, this camera is only for fanboys with lens collections and trust funds.

A Guide to Buying a Camera

A Guide to Buying a Camera
by Stuart R Mitchell

The information in this article is based on the very basic things to consider when looking at buying a camera; it does not go in to all the technical issues of what the numerous functions are as there are thousands of web sites available that give a very detailed definition and explanation of the various functions. The guide is produced from questions asked by potential buyers of cameras from my own web site.

Ok where do you start when looking for a camera, as we know there are currently The information in this article is based on the very basic things to consider when looking at buying a thousands of options on the market at any one time, there are some very basic things to consider, these can not only save you time but most of all money.

Budget

Before you go out and spend thousands of your hard earned dollars on a camera that has every possible function know to man and will even make you lunch if you input the settings correctly, have a budget in mind as this will help you discount the more professional cameras, these will provide you the very best pictures but it all depends who holds the camera. We have all seen the ones with the huge lenses on and you need to stand to take the weight, OK theses are great but the guy behind the camera has had years of experience and knows how to use it so spending thousands is OK for him but is that for you, so as with most things you buy set a budget as this will discount many cameras.

What Pictures Do I Want To Take

This may seem obvious but do I want to take pictures of friends and family, Sports and events or maybe far away objects like buildings and scenery. Many of the lower end cameras will provide great pictures for all these; they will have the option to point and shoot within the settings, which will make them very easy to use.

Do I want Digital These days digital is at the forefront of most cameras, in fact even most of the professionals have gone away from film, digital allows you to add your pictures to your pc and in most cases has the benefit of imaging software as part of the package. Assuming you want digital then your next thing to is do I want a compact camera or do I want the SLR option. There are many differences between the Compact and SLR camera not lease of all the price, so again you must have a budget in mind.

SLR or Compact SLRs are mostly focused on capturing still images, not video, but on some compact you can take videos, compact digital cameras have electronic zooms, just push a button and the camera's lens zooms in and out, with a digital SLR, you're going to need two hands as zooming is a manual process. Compact cameras with a 10x or 12x zoom cover an extremely wide range from wide angle to telephoto, with SLR you have the option to interchange the lens, these all come at a price. If you want a 12x zoom with a digital SLR, it's a better bet to get two lenses instead of just one.

The Bottom Line Do you want to take more professional-looking photos, do you want to be able to change the lens attached to your camera, do you want more control over the photos that you take, do you want to take lots of photos in dim light, if this is the case then the SLR range is the one for you. If you do not want these options then go for a compact digital. Always ensure you have a budget, do not buy a camera just because it looks good and has loads of functions, you may never use half of them and would not guarantee good quality pictures. Always choose a good brand such as Cannon, Panasonic, Nikon or Olympus, all have a great product range and will have a camera to fit in with everyone's needs, I have a preference for Panasonic and have both a compact and SLR, the compact I use for the basic point and shoot, the SLR for the more complex pictures. If you follow the basics steps, it will help when you get to the more technical issue

Getting Down To The Basics In Choosing A Camera Lens

Getting Down To The Basics In Choosing A Camera Lens
by Corey Palmer

Fond of magnificent sunsets but just can't get the nicest shot with your camera? How about those breathtaking landscapes that never cease to soothe your soul every time you travel outside the city? Or maybe you're fond of close-up shots and portraits of your kids, and would also like to photograph the sports activities they engage in at school.

The big question is, which camera lens should you lug along? When shooting sunsets, a telephoto lens should do the trick. For landscape shots, a wide angle lens is ideal. A wide angle lens is what's responsible for a special 3D effect. A photograph can look so clear & fantastic that it creates the feeling of being able to walk into the picture. Example- a nice shot of scenery requires a different digital SLR lens than a portrait. In like manner, another type of digital camera lens is required to take clear shots of insects or small particles on the ground as against towering skyscrapers, action scenes, and animals roaming in the field.

Nonetheless, modern interchangeable camera lens can do all that, while providing the photographer with greater control and creativity in producing brilliant pictures that look like they were taken by a real pro. Whether you're an exploring amateur or a seasoned professional photographer, you will find good uses for a digital or film SLR's interchangeable lenses.

Autofocus SLR's out in the market do not take any lens brand. Camera bugs recommend that you use a digital interchangeable lens built by the same manufacturer as your DSLR camera. In choosing a camera lens online, the top brand names that you are bound to find include Canon, Nikon, Olympus, Sony, Pentax, to name some. Know that independent lens manufacturers exist, though, with their own camera lens range.

Some hobbyists opt for a one-zoom lens that can be used in place of the more conventional camera lens range and generally slower speed zoom lenses that are usually offered with contemporary SLR cameras. Extreme close-up shots of things like collectible products or nature will require a macro camera lens that offers sharp focusing. Taking pictures of collectibles, such as coins and stamps. Wide-angle camera lenses wider field-of-view (compared to a telephoto lens narrower option) make that type of camera lens highly suitable for capturing landscape scenery or indoor shots like your child's piano recital.

The answer to which camera lens will work best for you and your digital SLR is not an obvious one. To narrow down your choices to the best fit, read as much consumer reviews as well as price and feature comparisons as you can from numerous online sites. Photography books likewise abound to elaborate on the many different types of products and tips in choosing a camera lens that will serve you well.

What Exactly Is Digital SLR?

What Exactly Is Digital SLR?
by Corey Palmer

If you are among those who yearn to take excellent quality photographs with ease, and not have to keep asking other people to do it for you, it's high time you discover the world of digital SLRs. What exactly does the acronym DSLR connote and what advantages does it offer over compact cameras?

A digital single lens reflex is, in most ways, like the traditional 35 mm film camera, which just a few years ago have been snapped up by many camera enthusiasts for being a definite step up from compact point-and-shoot options. While the old, reliable 35mm film camera used film, with the DSLR you have an image sensor. SLR, which stands for single lens reflex, refers both to a digital or film camera which lets you view the scene you are photographing through a single `taking lens via a reflex mirror.

This reflex mirror is what directs light from the lens onto the camera's sensor and to the viewfinder through a special prism called a pentaprism mounted inside the camera. As such, the photographer gets an exact view of the subject through the viewfinder, as seen by the lens. Through the viewfinder of a DSLR camera, you can focus quite accurately and compose the shot just the way you like it.

In learning all about DSLR, you will deduce that it all boils down to two distinct benefits over conventional cameras you can obtain great image quality and have far greater control over circumstances affecting the photographs you take. Are you a newbie in the field of photography and still learning about terms lie aperture, shutter speed and ISO?

Take comfort (and delight!) in the fact that there are now upgraded megapixel DSLRs in the market, which are the lightest and most cost-efficient to boot, with innovative LCD display which can actually show you how changing camera settings can actually affect your images.

The camera body per se includes the sensor, electronics, viewfinder, and battery. You also have to consider the lens factor. As there are numerous options of DSLRs, there are also several lenses to choose from. Some problems encountered during the early DSLR days, like going wide, is now been remedied with the release of various ultra-wide choices that are have proliferated in the market. Indeed, modern camera trends are fast evolving, so it pays to confer with other camera enthusiasts and experts. Check out online merchants that offer price & feature information and bargain prices for some of the best brands of DSLR cameras.

The Advantages of a Digital SLR Camera

The Advantages of a Digital SLR Camera
by Mark Etinger

A digital SLR camera is a significant investment. And if you're going to commit to such a high-quality product, you probably want to know the benefits of ownership. With that in mind, here are some of the most significant advantages to owning a digital SLR - and how this camera can take you to the next level of digital photography.

What are the differences between a Digital SLR Camera and a Standard Digital Camera?

There are several key differences between these two types of camera that every potential buyer should know before making a purchase decision. These differences include:

· Auto-focus. Digital SLR cameras are not the place to go for automatic focus functionality. Unlike their less-expensive cousins, SLR cameras are manual focus.

· Price. Digital SLRs carry more powerful features that straight digital cameras and as such will also have a higher price tag.

· Features. As mentioned above, SLR cameras have a wide array of features geared towards the intermediate or advanced photographer. These include different lighting settings, zoom lenses, shutter speeds and more.

While the point-and-click crowd will be satisfied with less expensive digital cameras, those photographers who want to take a "step up" should consider digital SLR cameras as the next step in their hobby experience.

What are the Advantages of a Digital SLR Camera?

· Lightning fast shutter speeds. Why is a fast shutter speed important? Have you ever lost a shot with an inexpensive digital or standard camera waiting for the picture to snap? Digital SLR cameras are quick on the draw, so when that special moment happens, you'll capture it all in glorious color.

· Multiple lens options. Digital SLR camera offers serious options for serious photographers. Most prominent among these options is the ability to add a variety of different lenses to the camera. · Low light photos. Digital SLR's have the power to turn poor lighting conditions into great shots. The digital sensors in a digital SLR camera can bring vibrant images to life even when there's not enough ambient light to go around. And the coolest part, they can do it without using a flash!

· More human control. Cameras with automatic flashes or zoom controls are a great choice for many weekend photographers. But people who need a more control are better served by Digital SLR cameras. While many of the point-and-shoot features that make digital cameras so great are available here, there is also a wealth of customizable options in SLRs that a person can control just about every aspect of their photography.

EOS Accessories

EOS Accessories
by Canon Australia

Even if you're just starting out, understanding your EOS camera accessories will help turn great moments into pictures worth framing. So it's a smart thing to learn a thing or two about them.

Lenses

Lenses come under two groups: zoom and non-zoom (otherwise known as prime) lenses. Prime lenses are great if you have a particular shot in mind, but it's probably best to invest in a few zoom lenses instead as they are compatible with almost every shot. A matched standard lens such as an 18-55 or 24-105, and a telephoto lens like the 70-300mm are good starting points. The most common makes of 35mm of DSLR is the "all-in-one" 28mm-200mm.

Some common lens types:

Telephoto Zoom Lenses

Telephoto lenses are specifically created for shooting up-close or distant subjects. If you're a beginner, the 70-300mm is ideal for an all-in-one lens that is ideal for [portrait|closeup shots to sports photography.

The Canon EF 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 comes with a three-layer type Diffractive Optics (DO) lens that provides a more smaller size than other zoom lenses with equal aperture and focal lengths. It comes with Image Stabilizer, optimised lens coating to reduce flare and ghosting and uses only lead-free glass which is good for your health and the environment. Manual focussing is allowed, even during AF mode.

Standard Zoom Lenses

Standard Zoom lenses are similar to the Telephoto lens in when it comes to versatility and its compact size. These lenses are ideal for all situations, from a birthday party to portrait shots of friends.

The Canon 24/105mm f/4 comes with an inner focussing, ring USM and the latest fast and quiet autofocusing. The Image Stabilizer gives the equivalent effect of a shutter speed that is three stops faster and the optimised lens coating decreases ghosting and flare. There is a high dust and moisture resistance for extreme environments and the glass is totally lead-free. You can even use the manual focus when in AF mode.

Flash

You can also get various effects simply by dabbling with the flash, which is great fun. For example, in Aperture-priority (Av) mode, the flash (sometimes called speedlites) can provide good exposure to subjects in the background and foreground. Certain speedlites have flash metering systems that even out the surrounding light with the flash, bringing about realistic-looking images under any light .

Some common flash types:

Speedlites

Canon Speedlites and EOS SLR cameras are the bread and butter of digital photography. Speedlites are incredibly versatile and can even be used on some Canon Powershot digital cameras. The Canon Speedlite 430EXII is a midrange flash for DSLR photography lovers. Compared to the its previous model EX430, it has a shorter recycling time which means faster speed, as well as quiet recycling for subtle camera moments like weddings. A new quick-lock attachments gives you simple camera attachment while metal foot mounting provides better connectivity. In addition, you can even manage the Speedlite settings via the camera's menu system.

Getting started

- Capture subjects against dark backgrounds to avoid casting shadows - If your speedlite has a tilting head, try aiming the flash at the ceiling for a softer lighting effect on your subject
