A Guide to Buying a Camera

A Guide to Buying a Camera
by Stuart R Mitchell

The information in this article is based on the very basic things to consider when looking at buying a camera; it does not go in to all the technical issues of what the numerous functions are as there are thousands of web sites available that give a very detailed definition and explanation of the various functions. The guide is produced from questions asked by potential buyers of cameras from my own web site.

Ok where do you start when looking for a camera, as we know there are currently The information in this article is based on the very basic things to consider when looking at buying a thousands of options on the market at any one time, there are some very basic things to consider, these can not only save you time but most of all money.

Budget

Before you go out and spend thousands of your hard earned dollars on a camera that has every possible function know to man and will even make you lunch if you input the settings correctly, have a budget in mind as this will help you discount the more professional cameras, these will provide you the very best pictures but it all depends who holds the camera. We have all seen the ones with the huge lenses on and you need to stand to take the weight, OK theses are great but the guy behind the camera has had years of experience and knows how to use it so spending thousands is OK for him but is that for you, so as with most things you buy set a budget as this will discount many cameras.

What Pictures Do I Want To Take

This may seem obvious but do I want to take pictures of friends and family, Sports and events or maybe far away objects like buildings and scenery. Many of the lower end cameras will provide great pictures for all these; they will have the option to point and shoot within the settings, which will make them very easy to use.

Do I want Digital These days digital is at the forefront of most cameras, in fact even most of the professionals have gone away from film, digital allows you to add your pictures to your pc and in most cases has the benefit of imaging software as part of the package. Assuming you want digital then your next thing to is do I want a compact camera or do I want the SLR option. There are many differences between the Compact and SLR camera not lease of all the price, so again you must have a budget in mind.

SLR or Compact SLRs are mostly focused on capturing still images, not video, but on some compact you can take videos, compact digital cameras have electronic zooms, just push a button and the camera's lens zooms in and out, with a digital SLR, you're going to need two hands as zooming is a manual process. Compact cameras with a 10x or 12x zoom cover an extremely wide range from wide angle to telephoto, with SLR you have the option to interchange the lens, these all come at a price. If you want a 12x zoom with a digital SLR, it's a better bet to get two lenses instead of just one.

The Bottom Line Do you want to take more professional-looking photos, do you want to be able to change the lens attached to your camera, do you want more control over the photos that you take, do you want to take lots of photos in dim light, if this is the case then the SLR range is the one for you. If you do not want these options then go for a compact digital. Always ensure you have a budget, do not buy a camera just because it looks good and has loads of functions, you may never use half of them and would not guarantee good quality pictures. Always choose a good brand such as Cannon, Panasonic, Nikon or Olympus, all have a great product range and will have a camera to fit in with everyone's needs, I have a preference for Panasonic and have both a compact and SLR, the compact I use for the basic point and shoot, the SLR for the more complex pictures. If you follow the basics steps, it will help when you get to the more technical issue

Getting Down To The Basics In Choosing A Camera Lens

Getting Down To The Basics In Choosing A Camera Lens
by Corey Palmer

Fond of magnificent sunsets but just can't get the nicest shot with your camera? How about those breathtaking landscapes that never cease to soothe your soul every time you travel outside the city? Or maybe you're fond of close-up shots and portraits of your kids, and would also like to photograph the sports activities they engage in at school.

The big question is, which camera lens should you lug along? When shooting sunsets, a telephoto lens should do the trick. For landscape shots, a wide angle lens is ideal. A wide angle lens is what's responsible for a special 3D effect. A photograph can look so clear & fantastic that it creates the feeling of being able to walk into the picture. Example- a nice shot of scenery requires a different digital SLR lens than a portrait. In like manner, another type of digital camera lens is required to take clear shots of insects or small particles on the ground as against towering skyscrapers, action scenes, and animals roaming in the field.

Nonetheless, modern interchangeable camera lens can do all that, while providing the photographer with greater control and creativity in producing brilliant pictures that look like they were taken by a real pro. Whether you're an exploring amateur or a seasoned professional photographer, you will find good uses for a digital or film SLR's interchangeable lenses.

Autofocus SLR's out in the market do not take any lens brand. Camera bugs recommend that you use a digital interchangeable lens built by the same manufacturer as your DSLR camera. In choosing a camera lens online, the top brand names that you are bound to find include Canon, Nikon, Olympus, Sony, Pentax, to name some. Know that independent lens manufacturers exist, though, with their own camera lens range.

Some hobbyists opt for a one-zoom lens that can be used in place of the more conventional camera lens range and generally slower speed zoom lenses that are usually offered with contemporary SLR cameras. Extreme close-up shots of things like collectible products or nature will require a macro camera lens that offers sharp focusing. Taking pictures of collectibles, such as coins and stamps. Wide-angle camera lenses wider field-of-view (compared to a telephoto lens narrower option) make that type of camera lens highly suitable for capturing landscape scenery or indoor shots like your child's piano recital.

The answer to which camera lens will work best for you and your digital SLR is not an obvious one. To narrow down your choices to the best fit, read as much consumer reviews as well as price and feature comparisons as you can from numerous online sites. Photography books likewise abound to elaborate on the many different types of products and tips in choosing a camera lens that will serve you well.

What Exactly Is Digital SLR?

What Exactly Is Digital SLR?
by Corey Palmer

If you are among those who yearn to take excellent quality photographs with ease, and not have to keep asking other people to do it for you, it's high time you discover the world of digital SLRs. What exactly does the acronym DSLR connote and what advantages does it offer over compact cameras?

A digital single lens reflex is, in most ways, like the traditional 35 mm film camera, which just a few years ago have been snapped up by many camera enthusiasts for being a definite step up from compact point-and-shoot options. While the old, reliable 35mm film camera used film, with the DSLR you have an image sensor. SLR, which stands for single lens reflex, refers both to a digital or film camera which lets you view the scene you are photographing through a single `taking lens via a reflex mirror.

This reflex mirror is what directs light from the lens onto the camera's sensor and to the viewfinder through a special prism called a pentaprism mounted inside the camera. As such, the photographer gets an exact view of the subject through the viewfinder, as seen by the lens. Through the viewfinder of a DSLR camera, you can focus quite accurately and compose the shot just the way you like it.

In learning all about DSLR, you will deduce that it all boils down to two distinct benefits over conventional cameras you can obtain great image quality and have far greater control over circumstances affecting the photographs you take. Are you a newbie in the field of photography and still learning about terms lie aperture, shutter speed and ISO?

Take comfort (and delight!) in the fact that there are now upgraded megapixel DSLRs in the market, which are the lightest and most cost-efficient to boot, with innovative LCD display which can actually show you how changing camera settings can actually affect your images.

The camera body per se includes the sensor, electronics, viewfinder, and battery. You also have to consider the lens factor. As there are numerous options of DSLRs, there are also several lenses to choose from. Some problems encountered during the early DSLR days, like going wide, is now been remedied with the release of various ultra-wide choices that are have proliferated in the market. Indeed, modern camera trends are fast evolving, so it pays to confer with other camera enthusiasts and experts. Check out online merchants that offer price & feature information and bargain prices for some of the best brands of DSLR cameras.

The Advantages of a Digital SLR Camera

The Advantages of a Digital SLR Camera
by Mark Etinger

A digital SLR camera is a significant investment. And if you're going to commit to such a high-quality product, you probably want to know the benefits of ownership. With that in mind, here are some of the most significant advantages to owning a digital SLR - and how this camera can take you to the next level of digital photography.

What are the differences between a Digital SLR Camera and a Standard Digital Camera?

There are several key differences between these two types of camera that every potential buyer should know before making a purchase decision. These differences include:

· Auto-focus. Digital SLR cameras are not the place to go for automatic focus functionality. Unlike their less-expensive cousins, SLR cameras are manual focus.

· Price. Digital SLRs carry more powerful features that straight digital cameras and as such will also have a higher price tag.

· Features. As mentioned above, SLR cameras have a wide array of features geared towards the intermediate or advanced photographer. These include different lighting settings, zoom lenses, shutter speeds and more.

While the point-and-click crowd will be satisfied with less expensive digital cameras, those photographers who want to take a "step up" should consider digital SLR cameras as the next step in their hobby experience.

What are the Advantages of a Digital SLR Camera?

· Lightning fast shutter speeds. Why is a fast shutter speed important? Have you ever lost a shot with an inexpensive digital or standard camera waiting for the picture to snap? Digital SLR cameras are quick on the draw, so when that special moment happens, you'll capture it all in glorious color.

· Multiple lens options. Digital SLR camera offers serious options for serious photographers. Most prominent among these options is the ability to add a variety of different lenses to the camera. Whether you're shooting panoramic vistas or emotional close-ups, there's a lens for your SLR to capture it more effectively.

· Low light photos. Digital SLR's have the power to turn poor lighting conditions into great shots. The digital sensors in a digital SLR camera can bring vibrant images to life even when there's not enough ambient light to go around. And the coolest part, they can do it without using a flash!

· More human control. Cameras with automatic flashes or zoom controls are a great choice for many weekend photographers. But people who need a more control are better served by Digital SLR cameras. While many of the point-and-shoot features that make digital cameras so great are available here, there is also a wealth of customizable options in SLRs that a person can control just about every aspect of their photography.

EOS Accessories

EOS Accessories
by Canon Australia

Even if you're just starting out, understanding your EOS camera accessories will help turn great moments into pictures worth framing. So it's a smart thing to learn a thing or two about them.

Lenses

Lenses come under two groups: zoom and non-zoom (otherwise known as prime) lenses. Prime lenses are great if you have a particular shot in mind, but it's probably best to invest in a few zoom lenses instead as they are compatible with almost every shot. A matched standard lens such as an 18-55 or 24-105, and a telephoto lens like the 70-300mm are good starting points. The most common makes of 35mm of DSLR is the "all-in-one" 28mm-200mm.

Some common lens types:

Telephoto Zoom Lenses

Telephoto lenses are specifically created for shooting up-close or distant subjects. If you're a beginner, the 70-300mm is ideal for an all-in-one lens that is ideal for [portrait|closeup shots to sports photography.

The Canon EF 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 comes with a three-layer type Diffractive Optics (DO) lens that provides a more smaller size than other zoom lenses with equal aperture and focal lengths. It comes with Image Stabilizer, optimised lens coating to reduce flare and ghosting and uses only lead-free glass which is good for your health and the environment. Manual focussing is allowed, even during AF mode.

Standard Zoom Lenses

Standard Zoom lenses are similar to the Telephoto lens in when it comes to versatility and its compact size. These lenses are ideal for all situations, from a birthday party to portrait shots of friends.

The Canon 24/105mm f/4 comes with an inner focussing, ring USM and the latest fast and quiet autofocusing. The Image Stabilizer gives the equivalent effect of a shutter speed that is three stops faster and the optimised lens coating decreases ghosting and flare. There is a high dust and moisture resistance for extreme environments and the glass is totally lead-free. You can even use the manual focus when in AF mode.

Flash

You can also get various effects simply by dabbling with the flash, which is great fun. For example, in Aperture-priority (Av) mode, the flash (sometimes called speedlites) can provide good exposure to subjects in the background and foreground. Certain speedlites have flash metering systems that even out the surrounding light with the flash, bringing about realistic-looking images under any light .

Some common flash types:

Speedlites

Canon Speedlites and EOS SLR cameras are the bread and butter of digital photography. Speedlites are incredibly versatile and can even be used on some Canon Powershot digital cameras. The Canon Speedlite 430EXII is a midrange flash for DSLR photography lovers. Compared to the its previous model EX430, it has a shorter recycling time which means faster speed, as well as quiet recycling for subtle camera moments like weddings. A new quick-lock attachments gives you simple camera attachment while metal foot mounting provides better connectivity. In addition, you can even manage the Speedlite settings via the camera's menu system.

Getting started

- Capture subjects against dark backgrounds to avoid casting shadows - If your speedlite has a tilting head, try aiming the flash at the ceiling for a softer lighting effect on your subject
